AIM-9L 是世界上第一種配備全向位雙波段紅外線導引頭的飛彈。它採用全新的導引頭與偵測器，使其無論目標相對於飛彈的方位如何，都能攻擊敵機。飛彈配備加重的環形爆破破片彈頭。它於 1982 年的福克蘭戰爭中，首次在大型衝突中使用。
The AIM-9L is the world's first missile with an all-aspect dual-band infrared seeker. It featured a fundamentally new seeker and detector, allowing it to engage an enemy aircraft regardless of the target's orientation relative to the missile. The missile was equipped with a weighted annular blast-fragmentation warhead. It was first used in a major conflict during the Falklands War in 1982.
