AIM-9M 是改良的 AIM-9L，1983 年服役。它換裝低煙發動機，並強化了反反制能力。AIM-9M 在低空識別目標的能力也更強，能在紅外線背景中辨識目標。這款飛彈幾乎可用於所有機型。
The AIM-9M is an improved AIM-9L, adopted for service in 1983. It received a low smoke engine as well as an enhanced counter-countermeasures capability. The AIM-9M also has an increased ability to recognise a target at low altitude, identifying it against the infrared background. The missile can be used on almost all types of aircraft.
