響尾蛇 AIM-9X 於 2003 年 11 月在美國空軍服役，是響尾蛇系列紅外線導引飛彈的重大升級。
AIM-9X 保留 AIM-9M 的 MK 36 發動機與 WDU-17/B 彈頭，但彈體是全新的，尾翼與控制面小得多，以降低阻力並改善飛行性能。
AIM-9X 的紅外線反反制能力更強，新的推力向量控制系統則提供更好的機動性。飛彈也與 JHMCS 頭盔顯示器相容：透過 JHMCS，飛行員只要看著目標，就能讓 AIM-9X 的導引頭指向並「鎖定」。推力向量控制與頭盔顯示器提供了高離軸能力（最高 90°）。

The Sidewinder AIM-9X entered service with the US Air Force in November 2003 and is a substantial upgrade to the Sidewinder family of infrared homing missiles.
The AIM-9X retains the MK 36 motor and WDU-17/B warhead from the AIM-9M. However, the airframe is new and features much smaller fins and control surfaces to reduce drag and improve flight performance.
The AIM-9X has an improved infrared counter-countermeasures capability, while the new thrust vectoring control system provides improved manoeuvrability. The missile is also compatible with the JHMCS helmet-mounted display. Using the JHMCS, a pilot can point the AIM-9X missile's seeker and "lock on" by simply looking at a target. The thrust vectoring control and the helmet-mounted display provide high off-boresight capability (up to 90°).
The missile is compact enough to fit into the internal weapon bays of stealth fighters such as the F/A-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
