AIM-120C 是全面性現代化計畫的一部分，特點是縮短翼展、縮小控制面。這讓 F-22A 猛禽的彈艙能裝進六枚（AIM-120A 與 AIM-120B 只能裝四枚）AMRAAM 飛彈，同時也降低了氣動阻力（但代價是機動性略為變差）。飛彈換裝改良的 WGU-44/B 導引段，彈頭重量減為 18 公斤（效果維持不變）。
The AIM-120C was created as part of a comprehensive modernisation program and features a reduced wingspan and smaller control surfaces. This allowed six (instead of four, as in the case of the AIM-120A and AIM-120B) AMRAAM missiles to be carried in the weapons bay of the F-22A Raptor, and also reduced aerodynamic drag (which, however, was achieved at the expense of somewhat worsened manoeuvrability). The missile received an improved WGU-44/B guidance section, and the weight of the warhead was reduced to 18 kg (while maintaining the same effectiveness).
