The AIM-54C was designed to be part of the F-14 armament and was intended for long-range fleet defense against approaching bombers. It features the new WGU-11/B guidance and WCU-7/B control systems. The missile is equipped with command-inertial and active radar guidance systems. The command-inertial guidance system includes a computer that also acts as an autopilot. Improvements to the rocket motor provide an increase in speed and range, and the new DSU-28/B target detecting device improves fuzing accuracy in high-clutter environments.
