The AIM-7E is an improved variant of the AIM-7D. This missile reintroduced the solid propellant engine, which increased its range. The AIM-7E was first used in the Vietnam War. Despite the US Navy's optimistic expectations, the missile proved difficult to use and insufficiently effective. Due to the imperfect "friend or foe" identification system, which forced pilots to approach the enemy for visual identification, the missile's long range was almost never used, while in close combat it was inferior to the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
The AIM-7E was used to develop the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow ship-borne anti-aircraft system (effective range up to 26 kilometres).
