AIM-7F 是運用麻雀飛彈在越戰中的使用經驗發展而成。它配備新的 Aerojet Mk 65 雙段固體燃料發動機（使飛彈射程增加到 70 公里），並以全新的固態電子元件（微晶片）取代真空管。新的 AN/DSQ-35 控制系統經過調整，可用於配備當時最先進雷達的飛機。彈頭重量增加到 39 公斤。
The AIM-7F was developed using the experience of the Sparrow's employment during the Vietnam War. It featured a new Aerojet Mk 65 dual-stage solid propellant engine (which increased the missile's range up to 70 km) and completely new solid-state electronics (microchips) instead of vacuum tubes. The new AN/DSQ-35 control system was adapted to be used from aircrafts equipped with the most advanced radars of that time. The weight of the warhead was increased to 39kg.
