The ZSU-57-2 design is based on modified T-54 medium tank chassis with rear engine-transmission compartment. It is armed with twin 57-mm AA S-68 autocanon consisting of two 4366 mm long S-60 AA guns with mirrored mechanical parts and loaders. Gun aiming is carried out using electro-hydraulic drives and in a case of malfunction can be switched to manual ( commander officer aims turret horizontally, gunner controls the the canon elevation.) The crew consists of six crewmen: a commander officer, a gunner with a sight co-gunner, two loaders and a driver-mechanic.
Every gun is consequently loaded with 4 round clips. Evaluative rate of fire achieves the figures of 100 rounds per minute per gun (200 rpm per canon) but actually they fire the sequences of 40-50 rounds per cannon after which they require cooling due to overheating.
Despite of highest fire power among all known self-propelled AA vehicles ZSU-57 lacks of fire control radar and it's efficiency against jet aircraft is considered as low. Overall relatively low fire rate with long cooling periods also known as one on a major drawbacks against fast low flying targets in 1960 - 70s. Despite of that, this type of AAA still under the service in some countries proving to be robust and reliable weapon against ground targets and helicopters.
