美國的 M60 系列戰車於 1956 年開發，起因是決定要做出 M-48 戰車的改良版。第一款 M60A1 於 1960 年生產並進入美國陸軍服役，但很快就被 A3 型取代。這款車型配備更現代化的射控系統與改良的懸吊系統，裝有雷射測距儀、熱像儀、電子彈道計算機與低矮砲塔，與該戰車的其他型號有所區別。

The American M60 series of tanks have been developed in 1956, after decision to create an improved version of the M-48 tanks. The first model M60A1 was produced and entered service with the U.S. Army in 1960, but it was soon replaced by the A3 version. This model was equipped with a more modern fire control system and improved suspension. The tank was fitted with a laser rangefinder, thermal sight, electronic ballistic calculator and low profile turret, which distinguished it from other versions of this tank.
Large quantities of M60A3 tanks were exported to Italy, Austria, Middle East and North Africa. Currently, these tanks can still be found in armored forces of African and Middle Eastern countries, particularly in Israel and Egypt. THe US National Guard is the main operator of these tanks in USA.
