BGM-71D TOW-2 的問世是 TOW 反戰車飛彈進一步改良的成果。與前代一樣，TOW-2 的彈頭更大（彈頭艙的直徑等於主彈體的直徑）。伸縮式探針也加長，成為三節式，並配有改良的混合燃料 RDT 與紅外線曳光管。數位控制系統也經過改良，以抵抗敵方的電子反制。

The BGM-71D TOW-2 advent was the result of a further improvement of the TOW ATGM. Like the predecessor, the TOW-2 had a larger warhead (the diameter of the warhead compartment equals to the diameter of the main body). The telescopic tip was also lengthened, becoming three-sectional with an improved mixed-fuel RDT and IR tracer. The digital control system was also improved to withstand the enemy electronic countermeasures.
It was operated by many countries. It could be used from AH-1, Lynx helicopters along with mobile launchers of various armored and non-armored vehicles such as M1046 HMMWV, IFV Bradley.
