The Air Boss (Air Officer) is the Commander who leads the very large Air Department on all US aircraft carriers. He, his closest assistant "Mini boss", and other heads of department are subordinate to the carrier's Commanding Officer. The Air Boss supervises catapult and arresting gear operations, control movement of the aircraft on the flight deck and hangar deck, responsible for operation of optical landing assistance Fresnel Lens system and other equipment supporting the Landing Signal Officers. He seats in Primary Flight Control ("tower"). He, along with his assistant maintains visual control of all aircraft operating within the carrier control zone up to 9.3 km (5 nm) from a carrier. Every aircraft desiring to enter control zone requests approval from AirBoss. This officer is normally one of a former CVW squadron commanders of the US carrier.
Air Boss has no special color for working jersey and can choose one he needs.
