Smerch 火箭彈的彈體內含 6,912 枚重型單體彈丸（破片），組成 72 個彈包，設計用於有效攻擊敵方輕型與無裝甲車輛；另有 2,520 枚輕型破片用來對付敵方人員。整枚彈體共有 32,832 枚破片，因此 16 枚 Smerch 火箭齊射，爆炸時會拋出 525,312 枚破片，覆蓋 672,000 平方公尺，平均每 1.28 平方公尺有一枚破片。
設計用於攻擊人員密集處與無裝甲軍用裝備，在開闊地形、草原與沙漠中最為有效。
Smerch rocket shell contains 6,912 heavy individual bullets (fragments) assembled into 72 packets and designed to effectively engage enemy light and unarmored vehicles, as well as 2,520 light fragments to engage enemy personel. The shell contains 32,832 fragments in total, so the salvo of 16 Smerch rockets ejects 525,312 fragments upon explosion which cover 672,000 m²; one fragment per 1.28 m² of surface area.
Designed to engage manpower and unarmed military equipment in areas where they are concentrated, it is most effective in open terrain, steppe and desert.
